More than two million orchids cover the 75-mile "wildflower corridor" along the Borderland Trail on Highway 11 from Greenbush to Baudette, running through Roseau. Over 800,000 of these orchids are the Showy Lady Slipper, the Minnesota state flower.
A wildflower celebration in June pays tribute to this colorful splendor. Pick up self-guided wildflower maps from the area information centers. In addition to wildflowers, blueberries, juneberries, and wild strawberries grow in abundance along the roadways and forest areas. You'll have to fight the bears for them!!
Roseau sits on the northern end of Minnesota's first birding trail the Pine to Prairie Birding Trail. This trail in NW Minnesota is home to approximately 275 regular species. Check out Roseau's birding hot spots. Visitors can find a variety of bird life within the area. Bald eagles, ducks, gulls, pelicans, egrets, rare warblers, sandhill cranes and owls find ample nesting in the mainland lakes, marshes, forests and prairies.
The Fall's palette of colors covers the forest as hunting season begins. The seasons overlap with partridge, duck, moose, black bear, geese and whitetail deer all fair game. Numerous wildlife refuges offer opportunities to view northern species of waterfowl, moose, deer, wolf and bear.
